PCI PIN Entry Device Evaluations
All devices that are to accept either Mastercard, Visa, or JCB PINs must be evaluated by a PCI approved laboratory. Witham Laboratories is one of these laboratories, and the only one in the Asia Pacific region. We provide our evaluation services to clients around the world, and our many years of experience in the detailed evaluation of PIN entry devices allows us to deliver timely and cost-effective reports.
PCI currently have standards for the evaluation of POS PIN entry devices (POS PED), and Encrypting PIN Pads (EPP). New standards for Unattended Payment Terminals (UPT), and Hardware Security Modules (HSM) are under consideration.
Witham Laboratories can perform full evaluations on any device, and provide guidance to manufacturers to assist in the understanding of the PCI criteria. Although, as an independent laboratory, we are not permitted to assist in the design of a product, we do offer a 'pre-evaluation' service, and our clients find our ability to indicate how the PCI criteria apply to their individual products invaluable. Experience has shown that such guidance helps to avoid problems early in the design of a product - therefore saving time and money further down the track.
Many devices are not compliant with the PCI standard when submitted for the first evaluation. Therefore, we strongly recommend that additional time is factored into projects to allow for additional evaluations, and that the cost of a second evaluation is considered when comparing prices.
A full evaluation takes approximately 4 weeks, starting from when we receive all the required samples and documentation. We seek the client's permission to send the finished report to PCI for accreditation, which then usually takes 2-4 weeks.
